What requirements do I need to become an equine dental practitioner certified by the IGFP?

Most of our members have attended courses at various schools in Germany, the USA, Canada, or South Africa. Some were also trained over many weeks and months by experienced equine dental specialists. The IGFP itself does not currently offer any training programs. We organize conferences, workshops and examinations.

Requirements, duration of training and costs vary greatly and must be inquired about directly at the respective training institutions. The costs range between €4,000 and €6,000, plus accommodation and meals. In addition, tools must be purchased. Depending on the level of quality and equipment desired, a similar amount of money may be required again.

Recommending one or more specific training institutions is particularly difficult. The evaluation of the quality of each institution depends heavily on the expectations of the individual participant. At every institution, there are people who were very satisfied and others who were less so. What is certain, however, is that attending a single course is unlikely to provide sufficient knowledge and skills to perform high-quality dental treatment on a horse.

It has become clear that the necessary qualifications can only be achieved through extended training—by combining courses with internships or by working together with experienced equine dental practitioners after completing a course.

Most of our certified equine dental practitioners will be happy to share their training experiences with you in a personal conversation and can provide relevant contact information. For the IGFP examination, it does not matter where or how you acquired your knowledge and skills. That is why many candidates attend various courses to gain the necessary expertise.

Working as an equine dental practitioner is physically very demanding. Therefore, we recommend that anyone interested in this career accompany one or, ideally, several practicing equine dental practitioners before booking a course, in order to gain insight into the nature of the work.
